FRIENDS OF THE NEWPORT NEWS PUBLIC LIBRARY

Home Page

The Friends of the Newport News Public Library is a non-profit, volunteer organization that was incorporated in 1981.  We support the mission of the Newport News Public Libraries by providing financial support for its programs and activities.

The Friends raise funds through membership fees and selling used books donated by the membership and reading community. Our volunteers sell these books in our bookstore, at book sales, at various sites in the community and at local events such as the Fall Festival and Denbigh Days..  In 2010, we were able to provide approximately $31,000.00 to the Newport News Library System.

Some of the many programs and activities our fund-raising supports are:

  • Summer Reading Program
  • Computer Labs
  • Personal Development Programs
  • Free Meet the Author events sponsored by the Peninsula Literary Consortium
  • And numerous other special events, concerts and book clubs
In addition, the Friends distribute free children's books to the community.  Over 4, 000 used children's books have been given away to encourage children to read since this program was initiated in 2007.

We are always looking for volunteers - see our Volunteer page for more information
